Segment 3: Vehicle Telematics, Security, & Remote Starts

There are two phases in the segment. In the first phase, students will learn about vehicle telematics and how this is applied in the 12 volt industry. Students will learn about internal communication networks that interconnect components inside a vehicle. They will learn about the standards that have been designated to allow devices to communicate with each other within the vehicle.
- Databus Communications
- Control Modules and Diagnostic Systems
- Multiplexing
- CAN BUS protocols
- Indentifying Multiplex or Variable Voltage Switching
- Identifying Low, High, and Medium speed CAN Voltages
- Interior Lighting Circuits
- Onstar Safety Systems
- OEM Consumer Safety Systems
- Aftermarket Consumer Telematics
- Fiber Optic Cables
In the second phase, students will learn the additional fundamentals of tampering with the vehicle’s overall electrical functions. Students will be introduced to the security industry and learn about components of an alarm and remote start. They will learn how to use the appropriate tools. Important OEM topics will be analyzed and other industry software programs that can save lots of time in the installation bay. Students will learn how to read these diagrams and test all wires. Students will also learn how to perform multiple relay applications in the vehicle. They will install a complete alarm and remote start system in a vehicle in addition to performing multiple relay applications. There will be a quiz, test, and hands on evaluation.
